PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man paralyzed from a shooting at a southeast Portland market in 2007 died Friday at a hospital.Chester Yeom, 42, was shot in March 2007 while working at the Belmont 34 Grocery. The shooting left him paralyzed from the neck down.A family representative said Yeom returned to the hospital Thursday because of injuries stemming from the shooting. The hospital said Yeom died shortly after midnight.Yeom had lived in Oregon since 1982. His family said he lived the American dream, worked hard and started his own small business. A statement from the family after the shooting said he was "well known for his generosity of his time to help family and friends."
At the time he was shot, Yeom was helping a friend and tending the cash register at the market, located at Southeast 34th Avenue and Belmont Street. The shooting happened at 4 p.m. on a Sunday.Jimmy Kashi, the man responsible for shooting Yeom, received a 35-year prison sentence for the shooting. Police also linked Kashi to other robberies in the weeks leading up to the shooting.Norm Frink, Multnomah County's chief deputy district attorney, told the Portland Tribune that the district attorney's office will consider filing murder charges against Kashi.
