80,000 Turn Out For Red Bull Flugtag

Beaverton Team Wins Flying Contest

More than 80,000 people packed Portland's riverbanks for the return of Red Bull Flugtag on Saturday.

Flugtag, which means flying day in German, called for human-powered flying machines to take flight off a 30-foot deck at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

While Red Bull's advertising touts the beverage will give you wings, spectators know few teams actually end up soaring gracefully through the sky. Instead, most nose-dive into the Willamette River after throwing themselves off the deck.

The judges for the event included Portland Trail Blazer forward Channing Frye and Kent Couch, who flew from Oregon to Idaho in a lawn chair carried by balloons.

Team Yakima, from Beaverton, took first place with their Big Wheel aircraft. The team won a trip to Salzburg, Austria.

Portland-based Greased Lightning took second place and FreeBallin' finished in third place.

Team Space Balls won the People's Choice Award by receiving 6,700 text votes.

Red Bull Flugtag last came to Portland in 2004.
