Dustin Gilbert, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex, said he heard a thump a short distance from him just before 10:30 a.m. He realized the child had pushed out the window screen and fell to the ground.

An emergency crew responded and took the child, who was conscious and breathing, to Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland.

Deputies said the boy lives in Idaho. He is staying in Happy Valley with his 18-year-old brother and his 25-year-old girlfriend.

Investigators said the 25-year-old girlfriend had been taking a shower at the time the boy climbed up a couch and pushed through the screened window.

He was in good condition as of noon Wednesday.
