Fake Guards Take Cash At Tigard Bank

Victims Say Guards 'Looked Official'

Two men dressed as security guards outside a Wells Fargo tricked two people into handing over the night deposits for their businesses Friday, police said.

Witnesses told Tigard police that the two scammers were standing near the night depository box of the Wells Fargo at 9200 SW Washington Square Road at about 10 p.m. wearing blue uniforms complete with guns, security badges and were carrying an identification card, officers said.

When the victims came to the bank to make a deposit the men posing as security guards told them that the night depository was out of service and they were collecting deposits, which they would turn in to the bank when it opened in the morning, police said.

The victims told police that there was a blue engraved sign positioned over the night depository door that read "Out of Service."

Both victims said the entire operation and the men themselves looked official, police said.

Bank officials said that they have never had any problem with the night depository and have never authorized anyone to collect deposits from customers.

Both victims gave their bank deposits to the men. Police became aware of the scam when one of the businesses called to check on their deposit the next day.

Laura Opel, who was in charge of the night deposits for a jewelry store Monday, said she's surprised people would fall for the con, but she fears they could strike again.

"If they're getting away with it, they're going to try it again," Opel said.

Other customers said they're concerned by the scam.

"In this day and age, it's awful how people are -- they're so untruthful," said bank customer Ginger Bernard. "I can't imagine how someone could do that to someone else."

The men were described as about 30 to 40 years of age with medium builds. Anyone who may have observed the thieves in the area of the bank should contact Tigard police at 503-639-6168.
