PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 19-year-old who admitted to being on drugs jumped into a deputy's window and attacked him early Friday morning when the deputy was trying to see if the man was OK, deputies said.Detectives said Evan David Thomas Adams, 19, of West Salem, admitted to being under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms when he leapt through the passenger window of Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger's patrol car at 3 a.m.Wollenschlaeger said he was driving near Southeast Hawthorne Avenue and State Street when he saw what he thought was a disabled motorist.He pulled up alongside a black Jeep that was parked on the side of the road to talk to Adams, who was standing near the vehicle, and Adams jumped through his passenger window, grabbed Wollenschlaeger and began to fight, deputies said.The fight spilled into Hawthorne Avenue and lasted for quite a while before Wollenschlaeger managed to deploy his K-9 unit, Yo, deputies said.With the help of Yo and a member of the Salem Police Department, Wollenschlaeger was finally able to take Adams into custody, deputies said.Adams was taken to Santiam Memorial Hospital and treated for dog bites and scrapes. Wollenschlaeger suffered some minor bumps and bruises but didn't need medical attention, deputies said.Adams was arrested on charges of assaulting an officer, interfering with a police animal, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, DUII and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
