PORTLAND, Ore. -- A car struck and seriously injured a Hood To Coast runner Friday night near Scappoose, state police said.Authorities said 20-year-old Chrystal Meyer's blue Kia Rio hit the 18-year-old runner from behind on Highway 30 at around 9 p.m.After the collision, the vehicle headed off the highway and went 50 feet down an embankment, injuring the driver, state police said.Chelsee Caskey, 18, who was participating on a Lincoln High School relay team, was seriously hurt in the crash. An ambulance rushed her to Legacy Emanuel Hospital.
Early Saturday, state police said Caskey was in serious condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. Troopers said she was wearing a reflective vest and a runner's headlamp at the time she was hit.Meyer suffered minor injuries in the crash. Her car wasn't transporting any Hood to Coast runners, according to a state police statement.The Hood To Coast Relay starts at Mount Hood and finishes 197 miles later at the Oregon coast in Seaside. More than 12,000 runners and 4,800 walkers take part in the event. Part of the course takes runners along Oregon highways.Oregon State Police restricted traffic to one lane in both directions during their investigation.State police are asking anyone who saw Meyer's Kia Rio prior to or at the time of the crash to call dispatchers at 800-452-7888.State Police Photos
