Sand Cave Collapses On Newberg Teen

Park crews have erected a new chain link fence and "emergency closure" sign to bar entry to a sandy bluff at Dash Point State Park where an Oregon teen was buried in sand.

Witnesses said 15-year-old Zac Lindsay, from Newberg, was covered for as long as 20 minutes before family members could dig out his head and shoulders Saturday. They said he had been playing in a sand cave when it collapsed on him.

Several Seattle television stations reported Lindsay was hospitalized at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. But hospital spokeswoman Louise Maxwell said she cannot confirm that.

Lindsay will be a sophomore at Newberg High School this fall.

Park Ranger Lem Pratt said the sandy bluff at the Federal Way, Wash., park is combed with holes and little caves that youngsters love to play in. He said fences and warning signs keep getting torn down.
