A man wearing makeup, a wig and a woman's pantsuit robbed a jewelry store in Gresham on Monday morning.

Police said the man who was dressed as a woman jumped over the counter and threatened a worker with a gun at Williams and Son's Jewelry on Main Street just after 10 a.m.

The robber broke the glass counter tops, grabbed an undisclosed amount of merchandise and left the store, officers said. Police believe the man escaped on a bicycle.

The shop closed down for the rest of the day and the owners said they were very shaken up by the robbery.

Video surveillance tape from a business next door caught the man coming and going from the scene.

He walked by the window with a bike, comes back again with the bike and, finally, it looks like he dumps the bike and that's when he walks into the jewelry store.

Then the security tape shows him walking quickly down the block.

Workers at nearby stores said this rarely happens in that area and it is very upsetting.

"My heart strings went. I mean they're the sweetest people. It's a family-owned business, they're honest they're hard working and they're there every single day," said Bianca who works next door. "And I was also thinking for their health, first off. I was making sure that nobody got hurt. It was really scary just to see so many cop cars around not only my business but theirs as well."

The robber is described as black, in his mid 20s, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall with a stocky or muscular build. At the time of the robbery, he wore a tan pinstriped pantsuit, a black shoulder-length wig that had curly hair and facial makeup.

Police said the robbery happened at 10:10 a.m.

Anyone with information on the crime or the robber's identity is asked to call 888-989-3505.
