Track Coach Accused Of Sexually Abusing Teen

UPDATED: 8:59 am PDT August 26, 2008

A private trainer and former high school track coach was facing a felony sex abuse charge Monday.

Askia Brown, 33, appeared in court on charges he inappropriately touched a 14-year-old girl who came to him for training at a private facility on Southwest 18th Avenue and Taylor Street.

The teen's father said the abuse happened Friday while Brown was giving his daughter a massage.

"This massage turned from something innocent and part of the training to a molestation of our daughter," the victim's father said.

His daughter then ran away and called for help. Officers arrested Brown that evening.

The father said he wants other parents to talk to their kids if they've gone to Brown for training.

In addition to providing one-on-one work with athletes, Brown was also an assistant track coach at Central Catholic.

An official from the Archdiocese said that Brown's contract with Central Catholic High School ended after the last track season.

Brown underwent a background check when he was hired, including being fingerprinted and the check came back clean, Bud Bunce from the Archdiocese said.

Bunce said that the high school plans to cooperate fully with the investigation.
