UPDATED: 10:55 am PDT August 29, 2008

A man assaulted an officer while police were trying to take him into custody, officers said.

Gresham police said that during a traffic stop they discovered that Ezekiel Wayne Streeter, 21, of Portland, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for parole violation. They were trying to arrest him when he punched one officer in the face, police said.

Another officer tried to use his Taser on Streeter as he ran away but was unsuccessful, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and began a search for Streeter, who entered a home, stole a phone and kept running, police said.

Police said they found and took Streeter into custody inside the perimeter when he fell out of a tree.

Streeter was taken to a hospital for treatment of an unrelated medical condition, police said.
