Zoo's Baby Elephant To Meet Public

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Rose-Tu's baby elephant will meet the public for the first time at the Oregon Zoo on Saturday.Zoo officials said the baby elephant, born last week, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hours are subject to change because the well-being of the animals is the top priority, officials said.Rose-Tu gave birth to the 286-pound elephant last Saturday.Zookeepers and veterinarians were surprised when Rose-Tu went into labor last Friday. Her original due date was mid-September.
The baby elephant has yet to receive a name. Directors said they have a whole list from which to choose, and zookeepers are still trying to decide which one fits the elephant best.Asian elephants are an endangered species with an estimated 38,000 to 51,000 living in the wild. The Oregon Zoo has a renowned breeding program for endangered Asian elephants.Prior to last week's birth, the last elephant born at the zoo was 14 years ago.What do you think the baby elephant should be named?
