FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- A brush fire burned up to 20 acres on Weyerhauser, BLM and private land near Gaston on Sunday.Kevin Weeks, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Forestry, said the fire started at about 4 p.m. Gusting winds hampered firefighting efforts by keeping fire behavior active and unpredictable, Weeks said."From the wind, smoke and stuff back in your face, it's pretty intense," said firefighter Eric Boyd.Crews used a Weyerhauser helicopter, 15 fire engines, four water tenders and a bulldozer in fighting the fire.
By Monday morning, crews had the fire 75 percent contained. No homes were threatened and no evacuations were ordered. It burned in the Cherry Grove area of Washington County -- south of Hagg Lake and west of Gaston. It's unknown what caused the fire."This fire really took off on us, in spite of the rain we've had," said Malcolm Hiatt, unit forester at the ODF Forest Grove office.Hiatt said people should be careful when hunting or camping in the woods.
