Worker Locked In Closet During Deli Robbery

Detectives are investigating a robbery at a deli in the Gateway neighborhood of Northeast Portland on Tuesday.

The place that was robbed is called Shelby's Deli, but it's actually more of a bar with video poker machines. No minors are allowed inside the business.

Just after Shelby's opened at 10 a.m., a man went inside and robbed the person who was working, police said.

He somehow locked the worker inside a closet in the deli, and the worker wasn't able to get out and call 911 for about an hour, police said.

The robber implied he had a weapon, but the deli worker never actually saw one, police said.

Police didn't release a suspect description, but the robber is still on the run.

Shelby's closed early Tuesday because of the robbery. The worker wasn't hurt.
