Arson Suspected In Pregnancy Clinic Fire

FBI, Other Law Enforcement Called In To Investigate

Police said a fire that started at a women's health clinic early Wednesday morning was caused by arson.

Fire investigators finished looking into the fire that started a little before 6 a.m. at the Pregnancy Alternative Center and determined Thursday that the cause was arson.

Since the fire was the result of arson and the structure housed a women's health clinic, the Lebanon police and firefighters called in additional support from multiple law enforcement agencies including the Oregon State Police, Oregon State Fire Marshall, FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

FBI officials said they are investigating to determine whether the person who set the fire thought it was an abortion clinic.

If that turns out to be the motive, then the arsonist would have violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which is a federal law.

It appears that the clinic is not an abortion clinic but does counsel women about abortions, FBI officials said.

According to the clinic's Web site they are a volunteer-based, Christian organization that helps women through unplanned pregnancies, which includes giving advice on abortion.

People who live nearby said they can't recall any protests happening at the clinic.

When firefighters arrived to fight the fire, flames were visible from the roof and windows, police said.

Witnesses said they woke up to the flames shooting up in the air.

The fire destroyed most of the building.

"It's a lot of destruction for all of the work that they've put in just remodeling and to have it destroyed is sad. I can't imagine that someone could be that destructive," said Sara Powell who lives near the clinic.

One firefighter was hurt while fighting the blaze and had to be taken to a hospital for the injury to his leg, but he was treated and released the same day, police said.

The investigation is continuing into the arson and police asked that anyone with information about the fire, or who may have seen something suspicious in the area of Vine and 2nd streets, to call Sgt. Kevin Martinez at 541-258-4305 or Detective Dustin Wyatt at 541-258-4319.
