PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man was rescued by his partner from a West Hills home after he had been overcome by smoke Thursday afternoon, fire officials said. The man was hospitalized by the two-alarm house as it burned in southwest Portland but his injuries were non-life-threatening, fire officials said.Fire crews received a call just before 4 p.m. Thursday about a two-story house fire burning out of control on southwest Garden View Avenue, said Karen Eubanks of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue.Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming out of the attic and back of the home, Eubanks said. One of the firefighters' main concerns was to keep the fire from spreading to the heavily forested area behind the house, Eubanks said"I was very concerned because of the woods. There's a gully back there and a heavily wooded area that gets fairly dry in the summer. It wouldn't take much to catch all of that on fire," neighbor John Morrison said. The fire's second alarm came in at about 4:10 p.m.Rescue crews went through the house to check and said only the one man was in the house at the time of the fire, Eubanks said. After an aggressive, multi-level attack firefighters managed to have the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, fire officials said.Eubanks said it was too early to know what started the fire.
