NEWPORT, Ore. -- A 19-year-old man found dead in a road last week was killed by a hit-and-run driver, Lincoln County deputies said Friday.

A passing motorist found William Mullican, 19, lying in the middle of Elk City Road last Saturday just before 11 p.m.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, located near milepost 6 just east of Toledo, they pronounced Mullican dead.

Since then, deputies have learned Mullican was seen walking along the road shortly before he died.

He lived in the small town of Elk City, about 15 miles east of the Oregon coast city of Newport.

Detectives haven't released any information on the vehicle involved.

They're asking anyone with information on Mullican's death or anyone who may have seen him walking along the road that night to call 541-265-4973.
