SALEM, Ore. -- Salem police are looking for the man who they said stole a woman's purse while riding a bicycle.Investigators said the robber was on a bicycle when he rode up and snatched the woman's purse right from her hand. The purse was attached to the 69-year-old woman's walker so she tumbled to the ground and suffered minor injuries.Sunday afternoon, the thief saw a chance for an easy score: an older woman, moving along the sidewalk supported by her walker on Center Street at Northeast 13th.
The victim told police the purse contained only a small amount of money.Neighbors said it is not a unique crime for that area of northeast Salem."I think it's pathetic, just absolutely pathetic. I would think it's part of the drug problem we have – the meth problem. The meth problem here is outrageous. On every corner you can look around and see that guy's on meth, that guy's on meth. You know?" neighbor Michelle Brinton said. The woman told police the suspect on the bicycle was a Hispanic man in his 40s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build and wearing a green jacket.Anyone with information about the robbery should call Salem police.
