An Idaho man who is an inmate in the Clark County Jail was arrested on charges that he took a man hostage in the jail and assaulted him Monday, deputies said.

Michael A. Jacobson, 20, was arrested by Clark County County Sheriff's Office deputies on charges of holding a hostage in a correctional institute, possession of a weapon in a correctional institution and second-degree assault a little after 9 p.m. Monday.

Jacobson was being held in the Clark County Jail awaiting trial for a 2006 charge of second-degree rape of a child, Sgt. Scott Schanaker said.

Clark County correctional officers heard a commotion and came to find Jacobson banging on his bunk bed, Schanaker said.

Jacobson demanded that he be allowed to speak to the media, that the guards move him to another cell and to have fast food delivered from a local restaurant, Schanaker said.

The inmate then took his cellmate, Kenny Madarash, 21, from Vancouver, hostage using a sharpened piece of plastic that had formerly been a utensil, Schanaker said.

A SWAT team was called in and they quickly took Jacobson into custody after using a flash-bang grenade to stun him, Schanaker said.

Madarash, who was in the jail for violating his conditions of release, suffered only a superficial cut on his forearm, Schanaker said.

Jacobson had been having trouble adjusting to the Clark County Jail and had been housed separately from other prisoners up until the incident, Schanaker said.

He had previously been convicted to six years for possessing a weapon in the Idaho State Prison when he allegedly tried to stab a prison guard, Schanaker said.

Jacobson is scheduled to be in court Wednesday to face charges relating to the alleged hostage-taking incident.

His court date for the child rape charges is scheduled for Nov. 11.
