MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- A McMinnville woman will spend more than six years in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from her grandparents.Earlier this month, Connie Cole pleaded guilty to theft, criminal mistreatment and welfare fraud of her elderly grandparents who are in their 90s.Detectives said she depleted their entire life savings, totaling more than $400,000.The fraud started in 2005 when Cole lied about a lawsuit and stole $90,000 from her grandparents, investigators said.
Then in 2006, she moved them out of a retirement center and into her home, which gave her complete control of their financial accounts.Investigators said Cole spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on cars, boats, jet skis, jewelry, and luxurious meals. One witness said Cole even bought a home in Sheridan so she could be closer to the Spirit Mountain Casino.During this time, Cole was charging her grandparents $7,000 per month for her services.Another granddaughter, Elaine Judd, helped detectives crack the case."The emotional has been extremely hard. Of course the financial has been really hard because they can't do things they need to do because they have no money, but then again that falls back to the emotional devastation she caused by defrauding them of their money," Judd said.Detectives arrested Cole in June. They said this was one of the worst and most blatant cases of financial elder abuse-and-welfare fraud they've ever seen.As for the elderly grandparents, their only source of income now comes from Social Security, and they are living at a foster care facility.
