Molalla Standoff Ends In Man's Arrest

UPDATED: 7:10 am PDT October 13, 2008

A five-hour standoff ended when a Clackamas County SWAT team fired tear gas into a Molalla home Sunday, deputies said.

Deputies were first called to the home on Highway 211 after a report of an intoxicated man firing a rifle on his property. Witnesses told authorities that the man who lives at the home, 47-year-old Cole Chancellor, is blind and has a history of violent behavior.

Tina Stevens, who lives in one of three homes that were evacuated during the standoff, said she heard the gunshots and called Chancellor to see what he was doing.

"I called him this morning to find out if it was him last night," Stevens said. "He said, 'Yeah, it was. Want to hear another one?' I said, 'No, not really.' "

Deputies said Chancellor barricaded himself inside his home and refused to come out.

After five hours of failed attempts to convince Chancellor to surrender, deputies fired tear gas into his home. Chancellor then surrendered without further incident, according to the sheriff's office.

Neighbors said they're not surprised to hear of the incident.

"He's always causing problems," said Shane Edlund, who lives in the area.

Deputies said Chancellor has a lengthy record -- 14 prior arrests in Clackamas County on charges that include assault, criminal mischief and burglary.

Chancellor was taken into custody on charges of unlawful use of a firearm, recklessly endangering and menacing. He's expected to appear in court Monday afternoon.
