PORTLAND, Ore. -- A robbery involving two men Monday night ended in a bizarre incident where one of them was dragged a short distance by their getaway car, police said.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, someone ran up to the prostitution beat car at 9:30 p.m. to report an armed robbery at a nearby business. Officers called for cover and approached a video poker lounge to find two men getting into their car near Southeast 84th Avenue and Division Street.

Police confronted the two men at gunpoint and ordered them out of the car, authorities said. Police said the driver complied, but the passenger moved to the driver's seat, placed the car in gear and tried to drive away.

However, police said, the pant leg or foot of the man who surrendered became entangled in the undercarriage of the car as the passenger tried to drive away and he was dragged for a short distance until officers could stop the car.

"We saw this black Honda come out from this video poker store on the corner and he ran over a person basically," said Patrick Halliday, who was nearby at the time. "He didn't run him over, but he knocked him over, knocked him out of his shoes."

The driver was taken to Oregon Health & Science University hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

The passenger, later identified as 27-year-old Spencer Howard, was taken into custody. Howard was booked into jail on charges of robbery, unlawful use of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm.

Officers said they were able to recover evidence from the robbery at the scene.

Police said they wouldn't release specific information about the robbery until detectives could finish interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses.
