GRESHAM, Ore. -- Police honored a rape survivor and advocate Tuesday for keeping her rapist from being paroled. They awarded the department's humanitarian award to Tiffany Edens at a ceremony Tuesday morning.Gresham Police Chief Carla Piluso presented the award to Edens.Piluso was the first officer to respond to the scene in 1986, when Edens was just 13 years old. This year Edens was honored for fighting to keep her attacker, Richard Gilmore, behind bars.Gilmore had his parole granted and was scheduled to be released before Edens challenged the decision because she hadn't been notified of the hearing. A judge granted a new hearing where Edens spoke against Gilmore's release."Tiffani showed tremendous courage in taking on the parole board and ensuring that that was not going to happen," Piluso said. Also honored was retired Multnomah County deputy Walt Van Hooser. He and his K-9 Smoke were instrumental in tracking down and arresting Gilmore.
