Free Stuff Ad Leads Thieves To Home

A post on Craigslist advertising free items led thieves to a southeast Portland home, the homeowner said Tuesday.

Deanna Dallas said her ad made her a target for thieves. In the ad, she told others to visit her home in southeast Portland at a certain time, but she wasn't home.

"I did put in the ad: 'Knock on the door and if I'm there, I'll let you see the rest of the stuff,' " Dallas said. "I just didn't think before I wrote that ad. Although it's a useful tool because I got rid of lots of stuff, you have to be careful."

The thieves broke down the fence to gain entry into the backyard. Dallas said they then loaded two trucks with tools, gas tanks, wheelchairs, a lawnmower, children's toys and five bicycles.

Dallas said she's not sure how she'll replace the stolen items.

Other people who answered the ad saw the thieves in two pickup trucks. One of the trucks was a white, short-bed Chevy pickup with an extra cab. The other was a black pickup truck.

Anyone with information that could help track down the thieves is asked to call Portland police.
