Vancouver, Wash. -- Police are looking for the man who attacked two men with a hatchet Saturday morning along Fourth Plane Boulevard next to Evergreen Park near Neals Lane. The two victims are friends and were walking along Fourth Plain Boulevard when the man attacked them with a weapon similar to a hatchet, police said.Detectives said they don't know the motive for the act of violence. The crime left one man with minor injuries but put the second man in intensive care at Southwest Washington Medical Center with a skull fracture, but police said he is now in stable condition and improving.Witnesses described the man who assaulted the victims as having a "1,000 yard stare," which officers said may indicate a mental condition.Investigators said they don't believe the man who assaulted them knew the victims. They also said the man with the hatchet was walking eastbound on Fourth Plain when he met the victims around 8:30 a.m. near Evergreen Park and attacked them. One man who manages a nearby mechanics shop said it certainly makes him re-evaluate his business' security."What's going to happen is we'll just keep a closer eye on who's entering our business, who's loitering on the property and our bays and shop," said Nathan Ackerman who works nearby.Witnesses said the man with the hatchet is white, 25 to 30 years old, clean-shaven and was wearing a brown wool cap and a brown hooded sweatshirt with baggy gray pants and white tennis shoes.Police called the felony assault a serious crime and said anyone with information about the crime should call Vancouver police.
