One Killed In Wrong-Way I-5 Salem Collision

POSTED: 6:41 am PST November 5, 2008
UPDATED: 12:16 pm PST November 5, 2008

A head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver caused Interstate 5 northbound to close Wednesday morning in the Salem area.

John Dubnyk, 92, from southeast Salem, died in the crash, which occurred at about 5:45 a.m. near milepost 252 in the Kuebler Boulevard area. Drivers who were headed north on I-5 were detoured onto Commercial Street and routed back onto I-5 at Kuebler Boulevard.

A witness told police that he saw Dubnyk headed toward him in his 1991 Toyota Camry driving southbound in the northbound lane, Lt. Gregg Hastings said.

The witness then slowed down and pulled to the shoulder and watched as the Camry crashed head-on into a 2001 Chrysler Sebring driven by Lonnie Dale Wiege, 51, from Southeast Salem, Hastings said.

Wiege suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to Salem Hospital, Hastings said.

Both vehicles came to rest in the right northbound lane of I-5, causing the lanes to be closed with a detour until about 8:15 a.m.

Troopers are still trying to determine where Dubnyk entered I-5 going the wrong way, Hastings said.

Oregon State Police are investigating the crash.
