VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Thirteen people escaped a house fire in Vancouver on Sunday. Two parents, their six children and the children's five friends who were visiting for a sleep-over all avoided injury, fire officials said. The fire at the 25th Avenue house began in a second-floor bedroom, where some of the children were playing Nintendo. They spotted the fire and ran downstairs to warn others, authorities said. They didn't forget their pets either -- they rescued two dogs, two cats, one turtle and two birds.Fire officials said the damage to the room is extensive and the rest of the house sustained smoke damage. It's also not the first time the family has been forced to deal with a major property loss. The family that escaped the Salmon Creek rental home didn't comment on the fire, but officials said the family lived in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home.
