KING CITY, Ore. -- In King City, golf carts are a way of life, but some are concerned that the city may be trying to change that way of life. Many in the community own a golf cart to get around, but some are concerned new rules will change everything."I like the fact that I drive my golf cart from here to the golf course up there," King City resident Don Heckler said.People don't just use the golf carts for golfing, they also use them to go to the store and meet friends for coffee."We leave our car just sitting in there and not wasting all that gas, you know," Heckler said. For the last 40 years, people who live in King City -- a community for those 55 and older -- have used their golf carts as a regular mode of transportation. The city is now looking at revamping its golf cart policy. One issue is who can drive the carts."A lot of people moved into this community to have the use of a golf cart, and to take that away from them, that upsets them," said Evelyn Tripp, who lives in King City. One of the rules would be that if you’re not eligible to get a driver’s license then you wouldn’t be able to drive a golf cart. Not everyone likes that."I think they should leave it the way it is. If you can't drive a car, I don't see why you couldn't drive a golf cart," Tripp said. The city manager said the city simply wants to make sure everyone in King City is safe. But many of the residents don't agree with that argument."Everybody knows there's golf carts in here. So everybody drives accordingly," Tripp said. The city also wants to make sure the golf carts are used only adjacent to the golf course."A lot of people want to be able to drive like they are right now over to Grocery Outlet, Shari's Restaurant," Tripp said. "They’re upset about it. They feel, a lot of them don’t have cars anymore and they use their golf cart to go over to the grocery store, and that’s a concern to them."The city is also talking about implementing an ID program that would help identify a golf cart's owner. But owners said they think they'll have to pay for it.The city manager said there is no fee planned. Most in town said everything has worked fine for the last 40 years."I don't see a reason to make a change," Heckler said.As it stands now, golf cart drivers must obey all the rules of the road or they could be fined. The city will hold a public hearing on the issue Dec. 3.
