PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man was charged with aggravated assault Monday after police said a woman was shot through the wall of her home.Alvert O'Neal Jr., 45, appeared in court Monday where the judge charged him with the shooting.Sandra Howell was sleeping in her apartment Sunday when she was shot after her neighbor's gun accidentally discharged, Portland police said.Officers were called to Legacy Emanuel Hospital after a woman showed up just before 4:30 a.m. The woman's gunshot wound wasn't life-threatening and after she spoke with officers, police went to her apartment in the 8600 block of North Columbia Boulevard.
Police determined the bullet came from a common wall shared with the victim's next-door neighbor.Police said O'Neal had thrown a .380 semi-automatic handgun on his bed when it discharged and fired the shot that hit the victim.O'Neal gave up the handgun to police and officers said it appears O'Neal thought the gun was unloaded.Howell was listed in good condition at Emanuel hospital.O'Neal wasn't able to return home after the court appearance since the judge ruled he can't be within 500 feet of Howell.
