NEHALEM, Ore. -- Several rivers were under a flood watch Wednesday, including the Nehalem River along the coast. If history has taught people in Nehalem anything, it’s to prepare for the worst so that’s exactly what they’re doing.Standing on the banks of the Nehalem River, it was easy to see that it is running high, fast and muddy. It wasn't a new sight for long-time residents there, but that doesn’t make the threat of flooding any easier to take.Get Updated Flood Information For Oregon RiversAs the river rose, warning signs were posted. Employees at the Mohler Market said if the rain keeps up they fully expect another wave of flooding.“Well, right now, it’s just a part of our life. But it is a hassle at the same time,” Tim Halverson of Mohler Market said. The store had been hit by flooding several times in the last few years so the staff was preparing by getting as much merchandise off the floor and bottom shelves as possible, but they know any flooding could be devastating.Sue Jelineo was preparing for the worst. She lined sandbags up against her garage and even had a kayak ready for an emergency escape.“Tomorrow should be interesting though, with this rain, and it’s so warm," Jelineo said.Jelineo also owns a gift shop where she was making sure to get inventory out of harm's way. After the ’96 flood, she had the building raised up.But Jelineo said she knows that flooding is still a threat.“We’d have damage and a lot of water to clean up, but that’s just the way it is, right?” Jelineo said.“Everybody knows nowadays what to do. When they say 'flood' everyone’s like, 'Boom, boom. Let’s do it.'”Flooding veterans were trying to stay ahead of the storm, but they admitted that it still puts them on edge.“We’re expecting, like, the worst now. Everyone’s saying it’s like the '96 flood and it’s looking like it right now," Nehalem resident Maria Polido said. "It looks pretty bad.”
