Amtrak Flying Passengers To Seattle

Horizon, Amtrak Partner To Keep People Moving

Amtrak trains couldn't get to and from Seattle Thursday afternoon but their customers were given another option.

Because of the extreme weather conditions, mudslides covered some railroad tracks, disrupting Amtrak service in portions of the Pacific Northwest from Thursday through Saturday between Portland and Seattle.

So in a last-ditch effort to get people moving, Amtrak made a deal with Horizon to fly their customers.

Dozens of people were stranded at the train depot in Portland, hoping trains would still be moving, only to find out they were out of luck.

But Amtrak and Horizon were able to work something out. Horizon juggled its schedules and added two flights -- 140 seats -- reserved for Amtrak customers.

Amtrak representatives said customers who had already paid for a train ticket didn't have to pay any more to fly because Amtrak paid the difference. Horizon also lowered its prices for anyone trying to get between Portland and Seattle to $119 for a one-way ticket.

Crews were working to get the tracks clear but Amtrak said if travelers had plans to go to Seattle by train, service both ways will be shut down until Saturday.

Officials said that train service between Portland and Eugene would still be operating normally.
