Friends and family of Alycia Nipp said their final goodbyes to the 13-year-old Monday afternoon at a memorial service near Vancouver.

Last week, Nipp was found in a vacant lot stabbed to death. Clark County detectives later arrested a 30-year-old transient in connection with the crime.

Dozens of people crowded into The Living Hope Church in Hazel Dell on Monday afternoon to say their farewells to the girl.

On Feb. 22, Alycia disappeared from a Hazel Dell neighborhood in Clark County and her body later turned up in a field west of her home.

Investigators have charged Darrin Sanford with the murder. Sanford is a sex offender who was recently released from prison. Police said Sanford admitted to the killing.

One family said that it has been extremely difficult to understand why Alycia was killed and that this memorial service is just the beginning of a long process as the legal system tries to find justice through the court system.

"They're going to have to relive this so often. That's one of my biggest concerns is it's not about the service today. It's about them having to relive it and hear it over and over and over about their daughter being brutally stabbed and murdered," Alycia's uncle, Mike Hannah, said.

Sanford was still locked up in the Clark County Jail without bail he'll be back in court March 11.
