Obama Buys Energy Bars From Corvallis

President Barack Obama apparently gets some of the energy needed to run the country from a bakery in Corvallis.

The owner of the Solstice Bakery said Obama has been eating his breakfast bars at least since the Iowa caucuses.

The goji bar maker said the president's favorite flavor is dark chocolate and peanut butter.

All the bars are made by hand, at the Solstice Bakery. Reiner Bohlen said he and his wife developed the recipe, while trying to get some more antioxidants into their 7-year-old son’s diet.

Bohlen said he’d never heard of goji berries until an aging hippie-looking guy came into the bakery and restaurant. Bohlen said he liked the flavor and evolved a bar that’s a vegan mixture of whole grains, fruit, organic peanut butter and chocolate.

They’re all baked, cut and packaged in Corvallis and shipped to stores and customers across the country.

One day, Bohlen got a phone call from fan who said he learned about the bars from the junior senator from Illinois.

"I was with the then-senator in Iowa, and I saw him eating this breakfast bar. It looked good, and he seemed like he had a lot of energy. Then he went out and said. 'Let’s go get this one!' So I went and found the wrapper, went online and ordered a case," Bohlen said of the fan's feedback.

The breakfast bar maker said he may donate a case to the White House. Bohlen said the manager of a store in Chicago told him Obama used to buy them there when he was still a senator, and had jokingly complained to her one day when she ran out.
