Two people were hospitalized after a car slammed into a power pole and then a house in southeast Portland on Sunday.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Southeast 162nd Avenue and Taggart Street.

Police said two people inside the car were heading north on 162nd Avenue when the crash occurred. Investigators said the 23-year-old driver was traveling between 75 and 80 mph in rainy conditions. He lost control before hitting the pole and then the house, police said.

Officers said the driver and a 16-year-old passenger were taken to an area hospital, where they're being treated in the intensive care unit.

Though there were people inside the home when it was hit, no one inside the house was injured.

Rubin Yanchuk, the passenger's brother, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.

"I actually passed them and then turned back," he said. "I was like, 'Wait a minute, that might be George,' and it was my little brother in the seat."

Wayne Louie, who lives across the street from the crash scene, said the wreck didn't come as a surprise.

"I've lived here two years and there have been two accidents just in this corner right here," Louie said.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said. The speed limit on 162nd Avenue is 40 mph.
