A Salem man was arrested over the weekend after his 7-year-old son allegedly huffed inhalants while in his care, police said Tuesday.

Officers said the mother of the 7-year-old became suspicious when she showed up at Jeff Culver's home to pick up her son.

The mother told police that Culver showed signs of drug use. Authorities said that when she questioned her son, he told her that -- like his father -- he also had taken one to two breaths from balloons filled with nitrous oxide.

Officers said they found five empty canisters of nitrous at Culver's apartment. He was arrested on charges of child neglect and reckless endangering. He was taken to jail but has since posted bail.

Culver couldn't be reached for comment at his home Tuesday afternoon.
