Police: Empty Tank Halts Car Thief Getaway

Authorities Say Car Stolen From Salem Dealership

UPDATED: 6:31 am PDT July 2, 2009

A suspected car thief was arrested when the car he had taken from a dealership ran out of gas, police said.

A sergeant with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office saw the vehicle traveling southbound Wednesday on U.S. 101 when it suddenly slowed, turned on its emergency flashers and coasted to a stop.

The driver told the officer that he had just ran out of gas. But police said the sergeant noticed that the car had no license plates, no temporary registration and a rear passenger window had been broken out of the vehicle.

He also saw two dealership stickers on the floorboard of the car from Power Kia in Salem. The Salem Police Department later confirmed that the vehicle was stolen from the dealership’s lot.

The driver, David Charles Wooten, 37, of Salem, was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving while suspended, police said.

He was being held at the Lincoln County Jail in lieu of $65,000 bail.
