PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Adventist Medical Center opened the city's first human milk donor depot this week. The hospital will accept breast milk donations and store them in their existing family birth center. Experts said the milk is given to infants whose mothers can't produce enough of their own milk. The breast milk provides babies vitamins and antibodies not found in cow's milk. Nurses said there's no need to worry about safety because each donor mother is carefully tested and milk is cleansed twice before being fed to a baby."We'll do a blood screen on the moms who are going to donate," said Angel Pyles, a lactation nurse. "The milk is pasteurized and rescreened before given to babies who are in need of it."In addition to being the first breast milk donation depot in Portland, it's only the second of its kind in the northwest. For more information, visit www.adventisthealthnw.com.
