An 8-year-old girl is in serious condition after a log rolled over her as she played in the surf, police said.

The girl and her father were playing on a log in the ocean near Rockaway Beach on Saturday, according to rescue workers.

The pair was told by other beachgoers that it was dangerous and they moved off the log.

But authorities said they didn’t move far enough and a wave rolled the log onto the girl, breaking her skull, crushing her larynx and breaking several bones.

She was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where she is expected to survive.

The father was also hurt rescuing his daughter.

Diana Wetzel-Price's son Jacob was killed by log on the central Oregon coast in 1997. Now she visits schools warning children to not play on logs in the surf and to beware of riptides.

Wetzel-Price said logs have killed at least 10 children on the Oregon coast in the past 10 years.
