Dozens of North Clackamas School District teachers could be laid off due to a $3 million budget shortfall, district officials said.

The district has already cut 60 positions and may have to cut an additional 60.

In an effort to control costs, North Clackamas School District officials said they have cut spending on textbooks, supplies and business travel by $1.8 million.

There have also been efforts to negotiate with the teachers' union to freeze wages but no deal has been reached.

Michelle Holtz, a parent, said the cuts will hurt students' education.

"Their classrooms are already so big," Holtz said, "(With fewer) teachers with more kids, they just don't learn as much."

Representatives from the teachers' union said they presented the district with what they felt was a fair and equitable offer. They said administrators walked away from negotiations.

District officials said it's still possible that something could be worked out before the school year starts.
