Handling Of School Abuse Case Angers Family

The family of a girl allegedly groped in a school bathroom said Thursday they're upset with how school administrators handled the case.

Linda Wilson, the victim's grandmother, said a 14-year-old boy followed the girl into a bathroom at Gordon Russell Middle School. When the girl went to wash her face, the boy approached her from behind and started to grope her, she said. He then shoved her into a stall to continue the assault as she fought back, Wilson said.

"She says she was pushing him, she was telling him, 'No,'" Wilson said. "He was trying to kiss her, she was moving her face around. You know, she just didn't want anything to do with him."

Wilson said she learned of the incident later that night. The following morning, she brought up her granddaughter's accusations with the school.

Police were called to investigate and they arrested the boy on a charge of third-degree sex abuse, which is a misdemeanor offense. Despite the pending criminal investigation, Wilson said the boy was allowed to return to school after a three-day suspension.

"I just think the school treated it much too lightly," Wilson said. "I'm not satisfied with the outcome because now my granddaughter is sitting at home scared to go to school."

A spokeswoman with the Gresham Barlow School District said they're aware of the incident. She said administrators conducted a thorough investigation and the district believes the school took appropriate disciplinary action.

Wilson said her family chose to pursue home-schooling for her granddaughter until further action is taken.

The incident occurred several weeks ago and the Multnomah County Juvenile Department received its report from Gresham police on Tuesday. The juvenile department will now review the case to determine whether the teenage boy will be prosecuted.
