Head-On Collision Killed 91-Year-Old Woman

OAKRIDGE, Ore. -- An Oakridge police officer injured in a traffic crash has been released from the hospital.Police Chief Louis Gomez said Daniel Miller, 27, was released from a Springfield hospital Thursday evening.A 91-year-old woman died in the Oct. 12 collision in Oakridge, state police said.A marked Oakridge Police Department patrol car was heading west on Highway 58 with emergency lights and siren activated when a 1965 Ford Thunderbird driven by the woman turned directly into the police car's path, according to Oregon State Police.The Ford collided head-on with the patrol car in the middle of the intersection at Highway 58 and Crestview Street in Oakridge.Virginia Spalinger, the driver of the Ford, was rushed to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.Miller was trying to overtake a speed violator at the time of the crash, police said.He was initially listed in critical condition after the head-on collision.Oregon State Police troopers are investigating the crash.Oakridge is a small town southeast of Eugene.
