An Albany woman is suspected of attempting to kidnap an infant from a hospital, police said.

Twenty-five-year-old Trinity Vidal-Hernandez was arrested Tuesday following an investigation into claims that she lied about a friend's medical emergency and then snuck into the maternity ward, said Captain Eric Carter of the Albany Police Department in a news release Tuesday.

On Sept. 19, Vidal-Hernandez went to Samaritan Albany General Hospital and told staff her friend called her and said she had given birth to triplets on the side of the road in Linn County.

Vidal-Hernandez also said her friend was being transported by Life Flight helicopter to a Eugene hospital, Carter said.

The hospital's staff members checked Linn and Benton county 911 centers and Life Flight, but didn't find any record of a person being transported as Vidal-Hernandez described, Carter said.

Vidal-Hernandez said she was receiving calls from her friend on her cell phone and led staff members to believe her friend might be coming to Samaritan Albany General Hospital.

Medical staff members were reassigned from normal duties to prepare for Vidal-Hernandez's friend, Carter said.

During this time, workers noticed Vidal-Hernandez had walked away. Staff members became concerned and checked the maternity ward, where they found Vidal-Hernandez.

Albany police officers were called to the hospital.

Vidal-Hernandez told police officers a similar story. Vidal-Hernandez also showed them a photo of the newborn infant she said her friend sent to her.

Carter said the investigation revealed that Vidal-Hernandez wanted to take an infant from the maternity ward and that the story about her friend was false.

Vidal-Hernandez told family members she worked at the hospital, Carter said. She would routinely spend time there and wear scrubs while at the hospital.

Neighbors said Vidal-Hernandez is a certified nursing assistant and used to work at the Timberview Care Center, which is near the hospital.

Carter said Vidal-Hernandez has displayed similar behavior at other hospitals. She is charged with attempted kidnapping, initiating a false report, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, Carter said.

The CEO of the hospital commended staff members for catching Vidal-Hernandez.

"The staff did a really good job. They trust their instincts, they follow what they're trained to do and it helps," said David Triebes.

Triebes said security measures would have prevented Vidal-Hernandez from leaving the hospital with a baby.

A neighbor said Vidal-Hernandez has three children of her own.

Cindy Johnston lives across the street and said that, even though she doesn't trust Vidal-Hernandez, she was surprised by the news.

"I would have never guessed kidnapping a kid, especially an infant, when we often wonder how she deals with the ones she has that she doesn't watch half the time," Johnston said.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Albany police.
