FBI: Suspect May Be 'Fantasia Bandit'

I-84 Police Chase Ends In Arrest

FBI officials said a man who they believe to be the "Fantasia Bandit" was arrested after a chase down Interstate 84 on Wednesday afternoon.

Portland police said the suspect robbed the HomeStreet Bank, located at 22 NW 23rd Ave., at about 1 p.m. Then, at about 2 p.m., officers said the same man went into the Albina Community Bank, located at 5636 NE Sandy Blvd.

Bank workers were suspicious of the man's behavior and called police. The bank was not robbed. Officers chased the man as he drove off and took Interstate 84 to the Lloyd Center exit, police said. Oregon Department of Transportation traffic cameras captured portions of the chase.

"We started to hear a lot of commotion outside -- sounds of engines roaring and squealing, stuff like that," said Ken Ristau, who works at the Portland Rock Gym in east Portland.

Police said the suspect eventually stopped his car near Northeast 11th Avenue and Burnside Street.

"He jumped out of the car (and) everybody was out -- guns drawn -- and they got him down on the ground as fast as possible," Ristau said.

Franklin Bearcub, 41, has been booked into the downtown Multnomah County Jail on a charge of probation violation. Robbery charges are expected in the coming days.

FBI officials said the "Fantasia Bandit," nicknamed because he robbed a Fantasy For Adults Only store twice, started the string of robberies in late September. The FBI has linked him to 10 robberies, including seven banks, in the Portland area. Officials said the bandit hasn't shown a weapon, but once threatened to kill a bank teller.

The "Fantasia Bandit" is linked to the following robberies:

  • Sept. 27 – Fantasy For Adults Only, 1512 W. Burnside St.
  • Sept. 29 – US Bank, 900 SW 6th Ave.
  • Oct. 3 – Fantasy For Adults Only, 1512 W. Burnside St.
  • Oct. 4 – Dotty's, 11955 N. Center St.
  • Oct. 5 – NW Resource Federal Credit Union, 221 NW 2nd Ave.
  • Oct. 23 – Key Bank, 444 SW 5th Ave.
  • Oct. 24 – Wells Fargo, 8334 N. Denver Ave.
  • Oct. 30 – Bank Of The West, 905 NE Halsey St.
  • Oct. 31 – Wells Fargo, 4233 NE Sandy Blvd.
  • Nov. 3 – MBank, 3636 NE Broadway

A woman who lives nearby said she's glad a suspect is in custody.

”I’m so glad they caught him," said Sharon Auterson. "(I) don’t worry about any more bank robberies or people getting hurt."
