A Salem man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after calling deputies to report that marijuana had been stolen from his truck.

Marion County deputies were called to the Free-Loader Tavern, located at 501 Lancaster Dr. SE, at about 12:52 a.m. Tuesday regarding a report of a vehicle break-in, said Lt. Sheila Lorance of the Marion County Sheriff's Office in a news release.

Calvin Hoover, 21, told deputies his truck was broken into while he was inside the bar.

Hoover told the dispatcher that the stolen items included $400 in cash, a Carhartt jacket and ¾ ounces of marijuana valued at $180, Lorance said. Deputies reported that Hoover was intoxicated when he called for help.

Deputy Ryan Clarke arrived at the scene but was unable to find Hoover or his vehicle, deputies said. Clarke tried to contact Hoover at his home, but no one was there.

At 1:50 a.m., Hoover called 911 again, Lorance said, and was angry that deputies had not responded to his report of theft.

He was driving when he called and the dispatcher had difficulty understanding him because he had to stop and throw up several times, deputies said.

Hoover's truck was found parked at 49th Avenue Southeast and Fontana Court. Clarke found Hoover about 100 feet away, walking down the street.

Hoover said he was looking for the people who took his marijuana, Lorance said.

Clarke determined Hoover was intoxicated and arrested him on suspicion of drunken driving.

Hoover does not have a medical marijuana card, Lorance said, and could face drug charges.
