VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A Vancouver man was arraigned Monday on charges of assaulting a child.

Ryan Kannegaard, 24, is accused of seriously injuring a 5-month-old baby last week, officers said. He was arrested at his home in the 10000 block of Southeast 10th Street in Vancouver on Friday.

Last week, the baby's mother took the child to the hospital, where court records showed the child underwent emergency surgery.

The court documents also said Kannegaard told investigators that a 3-year-old sibling accidentally jumped on the baby's belly.

A doctor who examined the infant said the force was far greater than that and that the baby could have died, authorities said.

The infant survived and is recovering from the incident.
