A middle school student in Vancouver was struck by a car Friday outside a school.

A Vancouver police spokesman said the 12-year-old girl was in a crosswalk when she was hit. The driver tried to avoid hitting the girl, but was unable to stop in time, police said.

Emergency crews were called to Crestline Elementary School on 7th Street shortly after 3 p.m. to take the girl to a hospital.

Vancouver fire spokesman Jim Flaherty said the girl was in stable condition and suffered a possible leg fracture.

Police said the driver is cooperating and no criminal charges are planned. The girl attends Wyeast Middle School.
