Few Details In Case Against Youth Hoops Coach

Kumbeno Memory Charged With Sex Abuse, Burglary

Authorities remained tight-lipped Monday about the allegations against a Portland-based youth basketball coach.

Police arrested 32-year-old Kumbeno Memory on charges of first-degree sex abuse, first-degree burglary and unlawful sexual penetration on Thursday. He was arraigned one day later.

Prosecutor Greg Horner would not comment on the details of the case. He said the crimes have nothing to do with Memory's capacity as a youth basketball coach and the case does not involve any underage people.

Milwaukie police said the investigation began in July and went to a grand jury, which then handed down an indictment. Police arrested Memory when he showed up at traffic court Thursday in West Linn.

Officers would not release any details about the circumstances that led to the investigation.

Memory has coached basketball clinics for children and teenagers at RiverPlace Athletic Club for Hoop Dreams Basketball, an organization that includes the I-5 Elite AAU program that competes nationally.

No one at a southwest Portland apartment that is listed as Memory's address could be reached for comment Saturday.

In an interview with FOX 12 in July, former Portland Trail Blazer Ime Udoka said he formed the I-5 Elite youth basketball team because he wanted to help area players get into college. He said he trusted Memory to help run the program.

RiverPlace Athletic Club released a statement Monday that said the charges are not related to Memory's work at the club. A spokesman for the club said Hoop Dreams rented court space and that it was one of several locations where the organization trained.

In an OregonLive report from earlier this year, Memory said he played four years of high school basketball at Jefferson High School and three years of college basketball at small colleges before he started his coaching career.
