PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland State University football coach Jerry Glanville has resigned, the university announced at a news conference Tuesday morning.Glanville did not attend the news conference.PSU Athletic Director Torre Chisholm met with Glanville on Monday, two days after the Vikings wrapped up their season with a 2-9 overall record and a 1-7 record in the Big Sky Conference.Chisholm said on the school's Web site that Glanville wouldn't be remembered for his win-loss record, but for the personality and attitude he brought to the school. In the three years since Glanville took over as the Vikings head coach, he has compiled a 9-24 record. In 2009, the Vikings posted their worst record in 27 years."I think the shame is we had a real opportunity to really take a significant jump forward as an athletic program, if everything would have come together. But it didn't," Chisholm said.Glanville, 68, was hired in 2007 amid speculation that the university was considering eliminating the football program. He immediately generated an unprecedented level of hype around the program and promised the Vikings would be winners. However, he has yet to achieve a winning season in Portland."I think it's a pretty mutual feeling right now that we just need to get better. And he was giving us that opportunity by stepping down today and we're going to get going from here on out," said Drew Hubel, a quarterback for the Vikings.Prior to his stint on the Park Blocks, Glanville served as head coach with the National Football League's Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. He also worked in sports broadcasting for FOX, CBS and HBO. He came to Portland from the University of Hawaii.Chisholm said the search for a new head coach would begin immediately, and he hoped to have the position filled by early December.Connor Kavanaugh, a Vikings quarterback, said some of the players want a fresh start."I guess just having a clean slate and starting over. It seems like some guys are excited to get a 2-9 season over with. And to get on with a new future and a new football program," Kavanaugh said.
