PORTLAND, Ore. -- A counseling center that helps children deal with death in their families is continuing its mission at a new Portland location. The Dougy Center was destroyed in an arson fire last June. The center, which provides group counseling and peer-support sessions to grieving children, has moved to a new, temporarily location in a remodeled house at Northwest 22nd Avenue and Glisan Street.Staff members at the Dougy Center said they've helped more than 600 children, teens and adults over the past year. The arson fire that destroyed the center's old southeast Portland location is still unsolved, but staff members said they're working with an insurance company and private donors to rebuild a permanent home."(The fire) impacted our families who were already dealing with significant loss in their family. To have the fire on top of that was really impactful for all of our families and volunteers and staff. However, we're most proud of the fact that we did not miss one group after the fire," said Brennan Wood, who works with the Dougy Center. The center's staff said the cost of building a new facility will be more than insurance will cover, so they're hoping for support from foundations and donors.
