Shooting Victim's Death 'A Shock'

Danny Le Gore Killed While Running Errands With Nephew

The family of a local man killed during a shooting Saturday said they are devastated by the loss.

Danny Le Gore, 56, was running errands with his nephew at about 1:30 p.m. when Washington County sheriff's deputies said 28-year-old Shawn Schumacher fired off half a dozen shots and led authorities on a four-mile high-speed chase between Hillsboro and Cornelius.

Hillsboro police said the gunfire erupted at about 1:30 p.m. after Schumacher got into a traffic dispute with another driver near Southeast 10th Avenue and Walnut Street.

Schumacher fired shots at officers and they shot back, killing him.

The victim's nephew, Matt, said he saw Schumacher open fire on his car, so he ducked but his uncle was shot in the head.

Matt said Le Gore tried to breath for a short time, but died before paramedics could help.

Le Gore's nephew and children said they are devastated by his death.

A neighbor said he can't believe his friend is gone.

"Well, it was a shock to everybody. We were all sorry to see him go," said Steve Bance.

Friend of Le Gore said he was a hard worker, loved his three children and had just become a grandfather for the first time.

"Who would have thought? But there again, you never know. Life it short," Bance said. "He was a carpenter, painter. He was just an immaculate person."

On Monday, there was no answer at Schumacher's house, which is less than a mile from Le Gore's home.

In a statement released Monday, Schumacher's parents said they are "deeply saddened by this act of violence."

"This past weekend, our son, Shawn, committed a random act of extreme violence that took the life of another man, Danny Le Gore. As we grieve the death of our son and Mr. Le Gore, we ask the question of 'Why?' We have learned that Shawn was experimenting with the drug peyote and committed this act while under the influence of this powerful drug. Uncharacteristic of who he really was, Sean has caused great pain for the family of Danny Le Gore, the communities of Hillsboro, Cornelius, and for our family."

Washington County deputies said they found evidence of a Mescaline lab at Schumacher's home in Hillsboro. Mescaline is a hallucinogen obtained from Peyote.

Deputies said a toxicology exam will determine if Schumacher was under the influence of drugs at the time of the shootings.
