A defensive lineman from Portland State University has been arrested on charges of assault, sex abuse, harassment and resisting arrest.

Officers took redshirt freshman David Gertson into custody on campus over the weekend. Gertson plays defensive tackle and has ties to the area beyond Portland State.

He attended Westview High School in Beaverton, where he was a decorated athlete. He earned all-state honors in football and all-league honors in track and field.

Gertson's status with the Portland State football team is not known.

The allegations of what led to his arrest have yet to emerge. Court records show Gertson was arrested Sunday by a Portland State police officer. His accuser is a woman.

Portland State students said the alleged crimes are a concern.

"If it's true what happened, I'm not proud of it coming from a fellow student at the school I go to," said Nathan Crawford. "They kind of represent our school to a larger public."

Gertson is in the Multnomah County Jail and his bail is set at $6,500. Three of the charges are misdemeanors and the assault charge is a felony, according to the county jail.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Nov. 28.
